Suspect 2. Transport
The transport sector accounts for around 15% of total greenhouse gas emissions.
Without action, greenhouse gas emissions from transport could grow by up to 65 per cent by 2050.
Transport is responsible for approximately one quarter of CO2 emissions.
Carbon dioxide is the largest contributing greenhouse gas to global warming, with its concentration in the atmosphere rising 48% above pre-industrial levels by 2020.
95% of the world’s transport energy still comes from fossil fuels.
Most cars, trucks, ships and planes run on fossil fuels, such as gasoline, diesel and kerosene, which are burned releasing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas.
Road transport is the largest source of emissions from transport.
It accounts for 69% of all transport emissions due to the burning of petroleum-based products, like gasoline, in internal combustion engines.
The Transport Sector accounts for 57% of global oil demand.
Over 90% of transportation is fueled by oil, and transportation accounts for almost two thirds of the oil used worldwide. Oil is responsible for about a third of the world’s total carbon emissions.
